ANOTHER FANTASTIC POEM BY DONNA DAVIS

The poem "Mt Cuthbert" was inspired by Sue Dennis' quilt "Copper Fire" and breathes a futher creative dimension that only words can convey.

Congratulations Donna.

Mt Cuthbert

The huge, heavy flywheel creaks slowly as the single piston breathes life into the iron monster.
Chuff…chuff , relentlessly, monotonously, it drives the pulley, hauling trucks, heavily laden with the blue green ore.
Back and forth, hour after hour, they bring the precious ore from the bowels of the earth.
Back and forth, day after day the men work, disgorging the ore, in the isolation of the desert.
Back and forth, month after month, the men trudge home, sweaty faces stained an eerie green from the copper ore.
The years go by, the iron monster chuffs relentlessly, monotonously, until the earth gives up its treasure …no more.

The iron monster lies broken and lifeless,
It’s cogs and gears scattered in the desert.
The Shanty Town lies broken and lifeless,
Shards of glass, tins and bottles scattered in the desert.
Voices of playing children, long silent,
A community long forgotten.

The site is abandoned, a few geologists fossick.
Will the earth give up more of its treasure?
Tourists stop and gaze in amazement at an era, long forgotten.
Amongst the ruins, a lone artist works,
Rubbing, preserving the outlines of the iron monster.
As the cloth takes shape, the past is reborn;
The history of Mt. Cuthbert is preserved.

Poems by Donna Davis

Dappled

In the centre of coolness I stood,

Enveloped by the canopy of greenness.

Delicate forest orchids trailed their colour around me,

And as I looked skyward, I was overwhelmed by the majesty of the giants

Stretching their arms to catch the warmth of the welcoming sun.

Fine rays of luminescence danced through the thickness of the overhanging blanket,

And Creatures stirred .

Warmth greeted the sleepy coolness,

And as the forest glistened with the fairy crystals of dew drops.

I rejoiced!

Dogs Down

Now Sue Dennis runs a workshop for beginners, just like me

To help us with our quilting and let our hands run free.

I’m going to put my “dogs down” and learn to freehand quilt

But when I saw Sue’s samples, I thought that I would wilt.

My confidence was lacking, I didn’t know where to start……..

I tried to follow all the patterns, of leaves and quilted hearts.

But , my tension was our of kilter and my lines formed little knots.

I tried and tried for all my worth, but I still saw little spots.

“I don’t think it’s the tension”…… “Well it must be me”…I said

Then I took a closer look at my pretty ,orange thread.

I removed it from the holder and checked the label too

I think I’ve found the trouble , I reluctantly told Sue.

I read the label carefully, and shamefully hung my head,

“Cos I was doing free machining…..with waxed , hand, quilting thread.

Now I really love this scribble, since I’ve changed the errant spool.

And thanks to Sue’s persistence, I think “Dogs Down” is cool”.
